Dealing with junk on a daily basis has some interesting caveats. Our drivers become a part of our customers’ lives for a few minutes, as they load junk from sometimes years of a person or family’s life. We’ve literally seen it all. In the midst of all of that junk, we have also gleaned some ideas for getting rid of junk. Sure, we encounter hoarders, but usually our customers are ridding themselves of stuff they just don’t need or want anymore. And it’s a beautiful thing!
We have learned that, beyond just the common sense of removing something that’s broken or worn down, getting rid of junk is an emotional decision at its best. Our top tip for getting rid of junk is to ask a simple question with each and every item in your home…
Does it bring you joy?
As far as we can tell, this concept for purging junk comes from Marie Kondo, an organization queen and author of the book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up. ‘Joy’ can be happiness, or satisfaction, or need (i.e. useful items like your can-opener). Asking this question, and purging the items for which the answer is “no”, can result in a wonderful purge.
This concept can be applied to clothing – why hang on to things you never wear? And think of all of those bath products you collect over the years; wouldn’t it be better if they were put to use by someone who actually needs them, such as a homeless person? There’s no reason to hang onto stuff that you don’t need, use, or even enjoy.
Ask this question of every item in your house, and you’ll be amazed at the results! Once you have assembled all of the “no” items to donate and/or throw away, we’re ready to help with your junk removal. Just give us a shout!
